‘Comeback’ Television

Cobra Kai Season 1 When I first saw the trailer for Cobra Kai, distributed by YouTube Premium, my first reaction was shock. It’s been 34 years since the first Karate Kid film, an 80s classic both in style and content. It’s one of those classics that you can offhandedly reference, and almost everyone will understand what you’re referencing (particularly the name Mr. Miyagi, and the phrase “wax on wax off”). I was interested to see how this would go – and interested to see that television series are actively picking up on narratives from the past and canonizing it, even…

Release Radar Playlist

One of the many reasons why I’m a die hard Spotify fan is because it puts together new music for you based on your specific tastes. Using some magical algorithms that are beyond my personal understanding, there’s a playlist you can access on your account called “Release Radar“. This personalized list is based on the artists and genres you already follow, often including new or newish songs that adhere to your taste, and changes every few weeks. The amazing thing is that “Release Radar” often also includes artists that I don’t know, exposing me to different talents every time. Essentially,…

The New Age of Superheroes

The Umbrella Academy TV Review Many of you have probably watched, or are planning to watch, the new addition to Netflix: The Umbrella Academy. The sci-fi superhero show is based on a graphic novel created by Gerard Way, who is best known as the former front man of My Chemical Romance, and artist Gabriel Bá. Right off the bat, I could tell that this show was quirky, goth-y, and slightly surrealist, which aptly fits with the Gerard Way circa MCR brand. The Umbrella Academy revolves around a group of children who were all born on the same day to women…

Art Appreciation Gallery

Happy Sunday, readers! There are some exciting things are on the horizon for AvidBards, but I can’t reveal anything yet, so stay tuned! However, in lieu of looking forward to a new chapter, today’s post is something a little out of the ordinary for us. Though we’ve previously put up gallery posts like 15 Beautifully Aesthetic Bookshelves, or its sequel, Mesmerizing Bookshelves Part 2, today I’ve decided to display a small portion of my visual art portfolio. Visual art has been a passion of mine since the beginning of time. In fact, both S and I love to express ourselves…

Captain Marvel

Film Review Even though S & I live in different countries, we still ended up watching the new MCU film Captain Marvel (2019) around the same time. This movie was hyped up for quite a while prior to its release, because this is the first Marvel movie that stars a female superhero! (Warning: Spoilers below) On one hand, it’s insane that it took 20 movies in The Infinity Saga before a female character had her own film. Of course, characters like Black Widow in the Avengers and Captain America movies, Pepper Potts in the Iron Man series, Gamora in Guardians…

“Harry Potter” and the Films Ranked

A few weeks ago I wrote a post ranking the Harry Potter books from least to most favourite. Today, however, I’m going to rank my favourite Harry Potter movies, because let’s be honest – there’s a pretty big difference when comparing the books to films. This is only natural, of course, because films have the difficulty of having to translate all the material in a book onto the screen in two to three hours. I think that as a franchise overall, the films were done really well. However, there was a ton of material that was left out in the…
