A Heavy Heart Playlist

A Heavy Heart Playlist

There is something very simple, yet profoundly huge, about the power of music: it can help us heal. Even amidst the most devastating of heartbreaks, music can be an enigmatically visceral form of therapy.

Listening to “break-up” songs (though of course, heartbreak can be the result of so many more things other than break ups) can be incredibly cathartic. As someone who tends to keep their emotions inside too often, listening to music is one of emotional outlets. Whatever you’re going through – romantic plights, issues with family, your job, your life, your friends, your own mental health, anything – it’s extremely important to have outlets that will help you move forward positively.

So at the heart of it, today’s playlist is a compilation of songs that have been my companions throughout the darkest of times. Whether they are driven by sad melodies, emotional lyrics, angsty vocals, self-care centred verses or amped up riffs, heartbreak music encompasses so many genres. And it doesn’t have to be inherently sad: heartbreak music can be whatever you want it to be. While it is massively important to maintain a good support system around you – ie. friends, family, partners – it’s not always possible to speak to someone about what you’re going through.

Music, however, is a form of communication in it’s own: it can help us realize we are not alone. I can truly say that music has saved my life on countless occasions, particularly when I’m feeling my lowest. Even to date, there are times when music can pull me out of the deepest, darkest headspaces and bring me to a place of hope.

Titled “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” after the Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus song of the same name, I’m sharing with you the playlist that gets me through heart aches, breaks, and everything in between.
