The Family Complex: “This Is Us”

If you know anything about the NBC show This Is Us, you’ll know that it’s an acclaimed tearjerker. I’m slightly embarrassed that even I, who rarely cries during a movie or show, cry constantly when I watch this show. Somehow, it surpasses the level of corniness often associated with emotional dramas and actually touches something real, coming from a genuine place no matter how far-fetched the premise might be. Because ultimately, yes, it is about a specific family (hence the title) – exceedingly unique, and yet, surprisingly relatable. The fact of the matter is that all families are flawed, and…

“Atypical” Season 2 Highlights

Warning: major spoilers for “Atypical” Season 1 and 2 below! Netflix original show Atypical, created by Robia Rashid, quickly became one of my  favourite shows almost immediately into watching Season 1 (released in 2017). It presented itself as a world that you can both escape to as well as relate to, which is something I always enjoy. Atypical balances real, raw content with quirky fun, all wrapped up into half-hour episodes in relatively short seasons; a tactic that always leaves you wanting more. Of course, the main reason why I love this show is because of the representation. Focusing on…

5 Best Guilty Pleasure Shows

As much as I love to watch shows and films that are considered truly artful and thought-provoking, I love just as much to sit down and mindlessly watch what might be considered “bad” television. Of course, the term “bad” is completely subjective, so I should really be saying that some shows are perhaps not of the best quality in terms of content, continuity, and let’s just throw it out there, acting. There’s something incredibly relaxing about not having to focus too much on the details of a show, though, which make these “guilty pleasure” shows so great. Here are five…

However, if you just need a place to start and don’t know where to, here’s a list of five amazing original series that truly give Netflix a good rep. Since some of…

Summer TV List

We’re coming back to you this month with a new TV list. You might remember that we posted a Spring TV List back in April. Summer is one of those times where you’re either so far away from the TV that you cannot remember the last time you even sat down to watch something, or you’re escaping the intense heat and humidity of summer days by sitting in your air conditioned lounge, flipping through channels, trying to find something engaging. And like all seasons, there is a specific mood that you want to go for during the summer, something intriguing,…

Blindspot First Impressions

As far as concepts go, the tattooed body as a message is not a new one. In fact, thanks to Prison Break, it’s a rather famous one. However, that doesn’t make Blindspot any less interesting. The premise of the show centres around an anonymous woman, Jane Doe, is found in the middle of time square in a bag, with tattoos covering most of her body, which turns out to be a puzzle that if followed may reveal who she is and what happened to her. The only clue as to who she is is the tattoo of FBI agent Kurt…
