5 Video Games for Storytelling Lovers

As the colder months approach and we’re less inclined to go outside, this time of year is the perfect one to curl up on the couch and immerse yourself in the world of gaming. Now as an important disclaimer, I didn’t own any consoles growing up, so my childhood experience with gaming was limited to CD-ROM and web-based games. In other words, I was (and in many ways, still am) a complete noob.  However, in my adult life, my partner—a lifelong gamer—introduced me to video games he believed were accessible and would speak to my love for storytelling, while still…

Where Have We Been?

You know that moment when you say you’ll do something tomorrow because you’re too busy today and then all of a sudden that ‘tomorrow’ you kept talking about is 3 years later? Well, that seems to be where we are now.

Destigmatizing Fanfiction – A Conversation with Damien Gerard

Actor Damien Gerard, who is known for his work in Call of Duty: Black Ops War and most prominently on the hit HBO Max show Our Flag Means Death, recently joined me in a discussion about the importance of fanfiction. Languishing on Screen

A couple of months ago an article came out in the New York Times that made its round all over my social media. It was entitled, ‘There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing’. As many of you might be feeling, and as the rate of published articles on AvidBards might demonstrate, the urge and motivation to produce has been in short stock in recent months, and this article suggests a reason as to why that is. Described as the ‘the neglected middle child of mental health’, languishing is ‘a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels…

Why I Want to See More Intersectional Queer Representation in Media

Visibility matters. It’s a simple enough concept, one we’ve heard time and time again. And yet, there is still a huge gap in mainstream TV and film media that needs to be filled. While I fully acknowledge that it has taken a long time for LGBTQIA+ stories to make their way to small and big screens, we are now at a point where we need to work harder to normalize intersectional queerness. As such, I expect those in storytelling industries to prioritize underrepresented queer voices, because there is simply no excuse not to make queer people of colour, people with…
