‘Osmosis’ First Impressions

Watching shows and films that are classified as “foreign language” media are ones that I always want to watch more of. Though I don’t particularly enjoy the phrase “foreign” when applied to these mediums, because this denotes that the English language is somehow the centre of the universe and anything else is an outlier, I do enjoy that Netflix is making an active effort to introduce more originals into their roster that are filmed in languages other than English. Popular existing examples of this are shows like Dark, Money Heist, and The Rain. So the new show Osmosis, created by…

‘Summer Again’ Playlist

Happy Summer, everyone! We know it’s been a little while since we’ve last posted on AvidBards, and S & I sincerely apologize for that. We have had family events, road trips, and travels galore this summer, and it’s been harder than we thought it would be to keep up! Today’s post is short and sweet as we get back into the groove of our regular posting schedule. As summer’s end begins to creep up on us bittersweetly, I have created a playlist of 30 songs that I’ve been listening to on repeat during these warm months. (We did one last…

Stranger Things: Season 3 Review

Warning: Major Spoilers for Stranger Things Season 3 Below Stranger Things has easily become one of the most revered Netflix shows of all time, in all its synth-80s-nostalgic-horror glory. Every actor – particularly the kids on the show – is incredible, and Stranger Things embodies the current era of prestige television to a T. Over two seasons and beyond we’ve seen Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and Caleb McLaughlin grow from teeny kids to teenagers, and it truly makes viewers feel like we are going on the journey alongside these characters in the small town of…

Aladdin (2019): Film Review

Before I watched the Disney live-action remake of Aladdin, I’ll admit I was a little nervous. As a South-Asian woman, I have been yearning for more South-Asian representation in media. Growing up, Disney movies Aladdin (1992) and Mulan (1998) (which Disney just released its live-action trailer for) were particularly notable in their depictions of different countries and cultures. Even though many of these characters were voiced by non-PoC actors, that never mattered to me because I was still visually seeing a diverse set of characters. I remember watching the original Aladdin and feeling such a deep sense of relatability while doing…

Fluid Sexuality in ‘Striking Vipers’

If you’ve seen the new season of Black Mirror, you’ll have seen the show’s heavily lauded first episode, “Striking Vipers”. And boy, was it a real doozy – from its strong cast, unpredictability, and the way it tackled certain societal topics, it has easily become one of my favourite episodes. Warning: Major spoilers for Black Mirror‘s “Striking Vipers” below (S5E1). Read at your own risk. The episode begins with two people, Danny (Anthony Mackie) and Theo (Nicole Beharie). They seem to be strangers at the bar at a busy club, only to reveal a few moments later that they were…

Pride Playlist

Pride Month is one of my favourite times of the year. I live in Toronto, which is one of the most diverse and queer-friendly cities. Pride Month is a time where the weather is finally getting warmer, the city becomes adorned with colour and liveliness, and though major corporations love to adopt Pride month as part of their marketing strategies (which I don’t really agree with), people are reminded of why there is so much to celebrate in the queer community. That being said, it’s extremely important for us to remember what the origins of the Pride Parade and Pride…
