November Writing Tips

As the year comes to a rapid close, I find I tend to scramble to finish the goals I set out to accomplish. However, sometimes I have to remind myself that new goals and experiences can pop up at any time, no matter how early or late in the year it is. Whether you’re taking part in National Novel Writing Month, the internet based project that is more commonly known as NaNoWriMo, or realizing you haven’t made much progress on (or even touched) the projects you’ve set out to do, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with setting a personal goal or…

“Daredevil” Season 3 First Impressions

Warning: some spoilers for Daredevil and The Defenders ahead! With the recent release of Daredevil Season 3, I was immediately interested to see what was to come of what used to be a favourite show of mine. Unfortunately, Season 2 was quite a disappointment. Aside from the introduction of Frank Castle, who went on to have his own show The Punisher, Season 2 left much to be desired. The heavy reliance on the mysticism of the Hand gave the season a totally different, campier tone from its predecessor, which was more gritty and realistic. It was precisely the grit, coupled…

Things I’ve Learnt by 25

Today I turned 25! And though I had planned not to work at all today, taking a full day off, I can’t imagine not writing on my favourite day of the year. This year, instead of a big party and seeing a lot of people, I wanted to live out my ultimate, perfect, lazy “Sunday” for my birthday. I had already taken a day off work so the night before my brother and…

Charmed: 20 Years After it First Aired and It is Still Iconic!

Coinciding well with the month of ghosts, witches and magic, this past week marked 20 years since the pilot of the WB show Charmed aired. If you are unfamiliar with the show, firstly, what have you been doing with your life? And secondly, you are missing out! And I say this knowing that while witches and hocus-pocus isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, there is so much to appreciate in this show. Charmed tells the story of three sisters, Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell (originally played by Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano with the addition of Rose McGowan…

Thoughts on the Man Booker Shortlist 2018

We are officially 10 days away from the announcement of the Man Booker Prize Winner 2018! At the end of September, the shortlist of six books for the prize was announced. And while the longlist saw potentially for the prize to expand its sights on to less conventional novels in the history of the prize, including the first ever graphic novel to be longlisted and the possibility for the first crime novel to be the prize winner, the shortlist seems to demonstrate the temporality of that diversity. The prize has long been considered one of the most reputable recognitions a…

The Family Complex: “This Is Us”

If you know anything about the NBC show This Is Us, you’ll know that it’s an acclaimed tearjerker. I’m slightly embarrassed that even I, who rarely cries during a movie or show, cry constantly when I watch this show. Somehow, it surpasses the level of corniness often associated with emotional dramas and actually touches something real, coming from a genuine place no matter how far-fetched the premise might be. Because ultimately, yes, it is about a specific family (hence the title) – exceedingly unique, and yet, surprisingly relatable. The fact of the matter is that all families are flawed, and…
