A Clash of the ’80s and ’90s
If we haven’t said it already — Happy New Year, readers! As we enter into a new decade, I find that it’s always fun to reflect on past decades. Whether it’s watching old movies or our favourite television shows, reading literary classics or listening to the music that epitomized a specific era, being nostalgic can connect us to our history and bring about old memories in a positive way.
So, to simultaneously celebrate 2020 and to revel in the past, I’ve put together a #throwback playlist that merges classic songs from the 1980s as well as the 1990s. What are heeded as some of the best and most experimental eras of music (particularly for us kids who grew up in 80s and 90s), this playlist has a mix of it all. The 80s brought about a ton of classic rock, alternative, and dance-pop styles, songs that make you want to don your best neon spandex and wear your biggest hair. The 90s then transitioned into more of the R&B, hip-hop, grunge, electronic dance, and pop – listening to any of these will easily drive you to all the denim, flannel, and Doc Martens you have.
Needless to say, both these eras are classic and distinctive in their musical styles, yet equally as critically lauded. Many of us are transported back to the feelings and vibes of the 80s and 90s when we listen to the music that defined these decades, making us appreciate the sheer artistry, poetry, and straight up ability to make us feel the rhythm and want to dance the night away.
