As temperatures in many places in the world continue to drop, the freezing cold and grey landscapes tend to sap the energy out of us. There’s lethargy from staying inside to avoid the cold; and infinite pain from braving the blistering winds when you do go outside. Let’s face it, winter can be a major downer.
Seasonal depression is a very real thing. Remember to keep practicing self care, whether it’s curling up in the warmth for a much needed nap, indulging in some of your favourite foods, spending time with your loved ones, or just spending some quality time on your own.
The power of music and song are most impactful to me when I’m feeling my lowest. In lieu of this, I’ve put together a playlist entitled “Winter Blues”. Music allows us to both revel in our melancholy, which results in a powerful form of catharsis, and uplift our spirits. I think it’s important to remember that it’s completely okay to acknowledge when you’re feeling down, depressed, low energy, or unhappy. I’ve found that acknowledgement is a huge part of the healing process.
Today’s list is a celebration of acknowledging when we’re not at our highest. In this list there is a mix of melancholy – songs that face mental health head-on in a raw and emotional way – and more upbeat tunes, ones that instil a sense of hopefulnesss inside me.
From Emily King’s soulful new album “Scenery”, to the calming crooning of SZA, to some of my older favourites by Foster the People, Young the Giant, and Florence, I hope this playlist reminds you that it gets better, it will get better. Stay strong, take care of yourself in whichever way you need: and in the end, everything will be alright.
