5 Shows I Recently Watched (and Loved)

I’ll cut right to the chase: I’ve been watching a lot of TV shows lately, especially with ongoing lockdown orders in place. As a result, I’ve put together a list of my latest TV recommendations of shows, ranging from teen dramas to Marvel to sci-fi and more!

American Gods: Season 1 vs. Season 2

During quarantine, I found myself buying an Amazon Prime subscription so that I could finally watch a bunch of shows I’ve been dying to catch up on, and American Gods was at the top of my list (along with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, and Good Omens, all of which I will inevitably review in the future!). Naturally, two weeks into my Prime binge, I had already watched the full two seasons of the show. And while I absolutely loved Season 1, I can’t necessarily say the same thing about Season 2. ‘Art & Grace’ by Catherine E. Chapman Review

Taking place in the early nineteenth century in southern England, Art & Grace, a regency era novel, follows a mixed-race maid, Bess, as she struggles to ensure a stable and safe future. The premise of the story intrigued me by the inclusion of aspects of slavery and race which is so often left out in the writings of Dickens and Austen. Indeed, in his book The World, the Text and the Critic, Edward Said points out how the underlying context of colonialism serves as the unspoken funder of the rich and wealthy during this period. Author Catherine E. Chapman brings…

Booker Prize Longlist 2019

It’s that time of the year again, and the Booker Prize (formerly known as the Man Booker Prize) longlist has been announced! Also known as the Booker Dozen (ironically as there are 13 books on the nomination list), this year’s nomination list seems unlikely to follow last year’s trend of diversity as the list includes many big names.  Margaret Atwood – The Testaments  Kevin Barry – Night Boat to Tangier  Oyinkan Braithwaite – My Sister, The Serial Killer  Lucy Ellmann – Ducks, Newburyport Bernardine Evaristo – Girl, Woman, Other  John Lanchester – The Wall  Deborah Levy – The Man Who…
