“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” Film Review

Warning: Major Spoilers below! When I first watched the trailer for the new Netflix film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (based on a novel of the same name), I wasn’t sure what to think. Personally, I am not a massive fan of overly sappy movies or shows because I find sappiness to be disingenuous most of the times, or romanticized to a point of unbelievability. That’s sort of how this film came across, but what caught my eye was that the main character was a PoC (actress Lana Condor is of Vietnamese ethnicity, playing half-Korean character Lara Jean…

Snap by Belinda Bauer – Book Review

Snap by Belinda Bauer (Penguin Random House, Bantam Press) “On a stifling summer’s day, eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. Jack’s in charge, she’d said. I won’t be long. But she doesn’t come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed forever.” While a very popular genre, crime novels have never been at the top of my reading lists. Not for lack of interest! I went through a phase in high school when I bought and burnt through every Kathy…

“Ocean’s 8” Film Review

The highly anticipated film, considered a “gender-bent” version of the original Ocean’s trilogy, Ocean’s 8 (directed by Gary Ross) is doing really well at the box office. But how does it compare to the original series, or even fare as a standalone film? The reviews so far are a mixed bag, and after watching the movie, I can truthfully say I understand some of those perspectives, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Here’s what I thought. Warning: spoilers ahead! Ocean’s 8 (2018) starred an incredible ensemble cast, and I was super excited to see some of my favourite actresses interact…

Avengers: Infinity War – Flop or Fab?

Major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War ahead! You have been warned! As is evident by the other blog posts we have done on the Avengers series (which you can read here, and here), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) was highly anticipated by us. With a budget of $322 million, the expectation for a mind-blowing film was high. And while the effects and the large star-studded cast certainly added to the glamour of the film, it inspired some dissatisfaction. Aside from seeing the collaboration between all the characters in the different Marvel movies (with the sole exception of Ant-Man, curiously) and the…

Marvel Movie Binge

If you have not already, go see the new Avengers: Infinity Wars Trailer that came out Friday! In fact, I’ll make it easy for you so you can watch it right here. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Now tell me, are you excited? Because I sure as hell am! I know that there have been a couple of disappointments with the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Thor: The Dark World was an utter flop, Captain America: Civil War, while interesting, felt like nothing more than two men having out their egos on each other, and let’s not even get into how terrible The…

Jumanji: A successful sequel – Shocker!

For most of Canada, January was a cold one! And those winter days are often the best time to duck into cinema to avoid the onslaught of cold winds and snow on one’s face. The warmth of the theatre and the familiarity of comfort food like popcorn and nachos making us feel comfy. Anyone who lives in Toronto knows that this week brought back the cold and snow, so the cinema seemed like a good escape from the dreariness. But the real question is what does one watch in this kind of weather? What is worth the $15 – $20…
