6 Non-Typical Christmas Movies to Add to Your Holiday Watchlist

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the classic debate: what’s the best Christmas movie? While many of us have our tried-and-true favourites like Home Alone, Love Actually, or The Grinch, (all of which we have previously included in our list of favourite Christmas movies) if you’re anything like me, you might getting a bit tired of watching the same movies year after year. There’s something refreshing about stepping outside the traditional canon. So, I figured I’d bring you a few suggestions that will suit you if you’re in the mood for Christmas vibes but with a unique twist. Here are six non-typical Christmas movies that will bring the vibes.

1. Klaus (2019)

Animated magic with a heartfelt twist.

This beautifully animated Netflix original offers a fresh take on the origin of Santa Claus. Directed by Sergio Pablos, Klaus tells the story of Jesper, a spoiled and selfish postman sent to a remote Arctic town, where he befriends a reclusive toymaker. The stunning hand-drawn animation, emotional depth, and clever storytelling make this movie a modern holiday masterpiece. It’s perfect for those who love a good cry and a reminder of the true spirit of giving.

2. The Night Before (2015)

R-rated holiday shenanigans.

For adults who want a bit of raunchy humour this season, The Night Before is a hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt choice. Starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie, this film follows three lifelong friends as they embark on one final epic Christmas Eve together. Packed with wild antics, offbeat humour, and even a few heart warming moments, it’s a great antidote to the usual cookie-cutter Christmas comedies.

3. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Where whimsy meets melancholy.

Though not a traditional Christmas movie, Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands features some of the most magical holiday imagery ever captured on film. The story of Edward, an artificial man with scissors for hands, is a bittersweet fairy tale about love, loneliness, and acceptance. Its iconic snow scene is pure Christmas magic, making this a perfect choice for fans of something a little darker and more poetic during the holidays.

4. Little Women (2019)

A timeless story with Christmas spirit.

Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women may not be a “Christmas movie” in the traditional sense, but its warm, nostalgic depiction of family and love is filled with holiday spirit. Several pivotal scenes take place during Christmas, complete with cosy fires, festive celebrations, and moments of giving that highlight the season’s themes of generosity and connection. A perfect pick for those who love heart warming dramas with a touch of literary charm.

5. Batman Returns (1992)

Dark, stylish, and sprinkled with holiday cheer.

Tim Burton strikes again with this gothic take on Gotham during the holiday season. Batman Returns is a superhero movie that leans heavily into its Christmas backdrop, featuring snow-covered cityscapes, mistletoe moments, and holiday parties that take a dark turn. Michael Keaton’s Batman faces off against two unforgettable foes—Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) and The Penguin (Danny DeVito)—in a story that’s both thrilling and surprisingly festive.

6. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Dark comedy meets Christmas noir.

Christmas in Los Angeles isn’t exactly snow-covered, but it makes for a perfect backdrop to this crime-comedy gem. Directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a whip-smart blend of murder mystery, Hollywood satire, and holiday vibes. It’s a sharp and stylish option for those who like their Christmas movies with a bit of grit and wit.

While classic Christmas movies will always have their place, mixing things up with lesser-known or unconventional holiday films can make the season feel fresh and fun. Whether you’re in the mood for heartfelt animation, dark comedy, or a gothic superhero adventure, there’s something here for everyone. So grab a blanket, pour some hot cocoa, and try one of these hidden holiday gems this season!
